How Dangerous Can Backing Up Your Vehicle Be?

Updated: Apr 26, 2019

Everyone eventually has to back up their vehicle at some point right? It is not as easy to be aware of everything surrounding your vehicle when backing up as it is going forward. It can actually be quite dangerous.

Every year, thousands of children are killed or seriously injured because a driver backing up didn’t see them. Majority of the time the person driving is either one of the child’s parents or another family member. A back-over incident typically takes place when a car is backing out of a driveway or parking space. Some back over accidents also involve pets.

Many companies have policies that forces their drivers to back into parking spots so they don't have to back out when leaving. Studies show that you are less aware getting back into the vehicle because the surroundings may have changed since you parked.

Even if you use all of your mirrors and turn around, there is still a blind spot when backing up.

Facts:

  • According to the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration (NHTSA), every year in the United States:

  • There are at least 500,000 back over accidents of some type.

  • 15,000 of them include some type of injury.

  • There are approximately 210 deaths.

  • 31% of all fatalities are children aged five and under.

  • Elderly people aged 70 and over make up 26% of fatalities.

In the history of the United States there have never been any laws requiring vehicles to have back-up cameras. The problem is, even when using all of your mirrors and turning around to look behind you, there is still a blind spot when reversing your vehicle.

It took years, continued deaths and a hard fight from parents and various organizations, but finally in 2008 Congress enacted the Cameron Gulbransen Kids Transportation Safety Act. It would take years and even lawsuits filed against DOT (dept. of transportation) for an actual law to finally be passed in 2018. This law requires all new vehicles to come equipped with a back-up camera standard.
